Kovalam & Varkala

Kerala's beach south — one resort, one cliff-top backpacker town, both facing the Arabian Sea.
Kovalam and Varkala serve different audiences on Kerala's southern coastline. Kovalam (15km from Thiruvananthapuram) is a resort beach town anchored by the Leela Kovalam and Taj Green Cove — luxury Ayurveda retreats with Arabian Sea views and organised beach facilities. Varkala (50km north) is a clifftop town above a dramatically beautiful beach, with budget guesthouses and yoga studios hanging over the clifftop above the waves. Both towns have active Ayurveda massage and wellness industries.

What you gain
- ↑Ayurveda retreats at Somatheeram and Nikki's Nest near Kovalam have been operating for decades with genuine Ayurvedic physicians — the Panchakarma and Rasayana programmes are far more serious than the day-spa versions found elsewhere in India
- ↑Varkala Cliff restaurants at sunset — thin-crust pizza and Kerala fish curry served side by side at cliff-edge tables above the surf — are an unlikely but genuinely good experience
- ↑The beach at Papanasam (Varkala) is said to have religious purification properties and is visited by Hindu pilgrims alongside backpackers; the coexistence is a reminder that this is Kerala, not Goa
What you sacrifice
- ↓Both Kovalam and Varkala are tourist-focused towns with limited authentic local texture; eating and drinking primarily at tourist-menu restaurants is the default unless you specifically explore the inland town areas
- ↓The Arabian Sea surf on the southwest coast can be dangerous — rip currents are a genuine hazard at Varkala and several international visitors drown each year; swim only in flagged zones
