Sunday tamu market, rice paddy landscapes, rafflesia flower trails, and longhouse visits in the Crocker Range foothills.
Kota Belud, 75km north of KK, is best known for its Sunday tamu — a sprawling weekly market where Bajau horse-riding culture meets Kadazan-Dusun vegetable sellers and Rungus bead craftspeople. The surrounding Crocker Range Biosphere Reserve is the best place in Sabah to spot a wild rafflesia (world's largest flower), and homestay longhouse programmes in villages like Monsopiad and Dusun Doringin offer an unpretentious view of agricultural Borneo. The rice paddy plains between Kota Belud and the coast, backed by the Crocker Range mountains, produce one of the most dramatic landscapes in northern Borneo — particularly at dawn or after rain.

What you gain
- ↑Kota Belud Sunday tamu: the most authentic weekly market in Sabah — Bajau horsemen, jungle produce, and handmade crafts with no tourist admission fee
- ↑Rafflesia Information Centre (Tambunan): the only reliable way to see a blooming rafflesia in the wild — flowers last only 5–7 days, rangers notify you when one is open
- ↑Monsopiad Cultural Village: a genuine Kadazan-Dusun headhunting heritage site with traditional blowpipe demonstrations and rice wine offered by descendants of the warrior Monsopiad
What you sacrifice
- ↓No public transport into the Crocker Range; a rental car or full-day tour from KK (from RM150) is required
- ↓Rafflesia sightings are never guaranteed — the bloom cycle is unpredictable and a second visit may be needed
