Dobrota — Baroque palazzo waterfront on the north shore of Boka Bay in evening light

Good

The elegant residential shore north of Kotor — Baroque palaces on the waterfront, local restaurants, and no cruise ships.

Dobrota stretches for several kilometres along the north shore of the bay from Kotor's north gate, technically a separate municipality but effectively the upmarket residential coastline of greater Kotor. The coastal road passes a series of Baroque palaces built by the wealthy sea captains of the Boka Navy — the Grgurina, Bizanti, and Tripković palaces among them — that stand between the road and the waterfront, their stone terraces extending over the water. The atmosphere is entirely different from the Old Town: local families on their boats, cats on the stone jetties, and a handful of excellent konobas (traditional restaurants) that serve the same food as the Old Town establishments at lower prices and without the tourist noise.

What you gain

  • The most serene accommodation option near Kotor: several beautifully restored Baroque villas and apartments along the Dobrota waterfront offer private sea terraces and direct water access. The views across the bay toward the mountains of the Vrmac peninsula are exceptional at dawn and dusk.
  • Restaurant Stari Mlini in Ljuta (just north of Dobrota) is regularly cited as the finest traditional seafood restaurant on the entire bay — a family-run konoba with a terrace over the water, fresh catch daily, and prices far below the Old Town equivalents. Worth the short taxi ride from Kotor.
  • Completely exempt from the cruise ship problem: the passengers do not come to Dobrota. The shore walk toward Perast in the morning is one of the most pleasant walks on the bay.

What you sacrifice

  • Requires a car or taxi for anything beyond the coastal walk. The bus service between Dobrota and Kotor Old Town is infrequent. Walking distance is manageable (15–20 minutes to the Sea Gate) but the coastal road has limited pedestrian infrastructure and can be fast-moving.
  • Limited evening entertainment — Dobrota is a residential area and after dinner the choices are limited. The Old Town's evening scene requires transport.
