Central Lofoten — the inhabited heart of the archipelago — Lofotr Viking Museum, Unstad surf beach, and the aurora base outside the crowds.
Vestvågøy is the largest and most populated island in Lofoten, with Leknes (the second airport, daily flights from Bodø) at its centre. The terrain is gentler than the dramatic peaks of Moskenesøy — open valleys, sheep pastures, sweeping beaches. Headline sights: Lofotr Viking Museum at Borg (recreated longhouse over the largest Viking dwelling ever excavated), Unstad surf beach (Arctic surfing capital), and Haukland and Uttakleiv beaches — among the most photographed in Norway. Quieter base than Svolvær or Reine.
