Mykonos

The quieter, more upscale south coast — family-friendly beaches, boutique hotels, and a calmer take on the island.
The south coast around Ornos and Agios Ioannis offers what Chora and Paradise Beach do not: a relatively calm, family-compatible base with proper beach infrastructure and upscale boutique hotels at prices that are slightly more negotiable than Chora. Ornos beach is sheltered and shallow — good for children and non-swimmers — while the beach clubs here tend toward daytime dining and sundowners rather than all-night parties. Agios Ioannis is where the film Shirley Valentine was shot, and the setting remains beautiful: a small bay with a church on the headland and a view back toward Chora and the windmills across the water.

What you gain
- ↑Ornos beach is the best family beach on the island — sheltered, with calm shallow water, organised sunbed and water sports infrastructure, and beach restaurants at normal human prices relative to Paradise or Chora
- ↑The accommodation here — boutique hotels and small villas in the hills above the bays — offers more space, more value, and more quiet than Chora while still being 10–15 minutes by taxi from town
- ↑Agios Ioannis beach at sunset, looking across the bay toward Chora and the windmills, is one of the most quietly beautiful views on the island — without the crowds and noise that accompany the same view from Chora itself
What you sacrifice
- ↓Not walkable to Chora — you'll rely on taxis or the bus for every evening in town, and the bus frequency in peak season means taxis become the default, adding up over a week
- ↓The beach and bay atmosphere here is pleasant rather than electric; those who came for Mykonos's famous energy and nightlife will find the south coast too quiet
- ↓Still expensive by Greek island standards — the south coast's upscale positioning means it's not a budget alternative to Chora, just a slightly different kind of expensive
