Crystal Bay & Northwest

The island's diving capital — calm waters, ocean sunfish encounters, and the quietest accommodation cluster.
Crystal Bay sits on the northwest coast facing a sheltered bay that gives the area its name: visibility here regularly exceeds 20 metres in the dry season, and the bay is one of the few places in Southeast Asia where Mola Mola ocean sunfish are reliably encountered between July and October. A small cluster of guesthouses and dive operators has grown around the bay, making this the best base for those who came specifically to dive or snorkel rather than sightsee. It is the quietest, most nature-focused area on the island.

What you gain
- ↑Crystal Bay snorkelling: 15–30m visibility in dry season with consistent manta ray and ocean sunfish encounters
- ↑Quietest accommodation cluster on the island — a genuine retreat from the Kelingking day-tripper circuit
- ↑Sunset from Crystal Bay beach is consistently spectacular with a clear western horizon
What you sacrifice
- ↓Far from Kelingking Beach and the southwest viewpoints — the standard circuit requires a full-day scooter or tour
- ↓Very limited restaurant options: a handful of simple warungs; no variety after dark
- ↓Almost no nightlife or social scene — not the base for travellers who want evening entertainment
