Oia

The sunset village — the most photographed caldera view on earth, and the most crowded.
Oia is the image everyone has of Santorini: blue-domed churches, white cubic houses, and the caldera dropping away below. The sunset from Oia's castle ruins is one of the world's great travel moments — and is shared with several thousand other visitors every evening. The village is genuinely beautiful outside of the 7pm–8pm sunset crowd. Accommodation here is the most expensive on the island.

What you gain
- ↑Caldera views from the hotel terraces: waking up to that view is worth the price at least once
- ↑Oia sunset: objectively spectacular despite the crowds; the light on the caldera is extraordinary
- ↑The village is beautiful to walk — the main pedestrian lane and the steps down to Ammoudi Bay
What you sacrifice
- ↓The most expensive accommodation in Greece; cave hotels with caldera views are extraordinarily priced
- ↓Sunset crowds are genuinely overwhelming — the castle area becomes impassable at peak season
- ↓Completely car-free within the village; luggage handling is challenging on steep paths

Other Santorini neighbourhoods
Santorini's capital and transport hub — more affordable than Oia, with caldera views and a real town.
The black sand beaches — better value, actual beach life, and a different side of Santorini.
The quieter caldera village between Fira and Oia — higher, calmer, and arguably the best views.
