The mainland base — Shute Harbour ferries, sailing bookings, backpacker bar strip.
Airlie Beach is the gateway town on the mainland — a 1.5km strip of pubs, dive shops, sailing-charter offices and budget hostels banked against a stinger-netted lagoon. Every Whitsundays itinerary funnels through here for ferries to the islands and bareboat charters out of Abel Point Marina. Most visitors spend 1-2 nights at the start and end of an island stay.
