Trade-off

The quieter north — pampas grass plateaus in autumn, outlet shopping at Gotemba, and secluded ryokan.

Sengokuhara occupies the broad plateau north of Owakudani and is the least touristy part of inner Hakone: the pampas grass fields (susuki) here turn gold from late September through November and attract a seasonal crowd of autumn photographers, but outside that window the area is genuinely peaceful. Accommodation leans toward discreet, high-end ryokan and small boutique inns favoured by returning guests who know Hakone well. Gotemba, just over the eastern border, is home to Japan's largest premium outlet mall and sits on the southern flank of Mt Fuji itself, offering a different kind of Fuji experience — close, imposing, and partly forested.

What you gain

  • Sengokuhara pampas grass fields (mid-October through November): golden susuki stretching across the plateau with Mt Fuji behind — a distinctly Japanese autumn scene outside the standard tourist circuit
  • Quietest ryokan area in Hakone: several acclaimed inns offer genuine seclusion without the road noise and package-tour coaches of Yumoto
  • Gotemba Premium Outlets: Japan's largest outlet mall with Mt Fuji looming directly above — a peculiarly Japanese juxtaposition of luxury shopping and volcanic scenery

What you sacrifice

  • No direct train access: buses from Hakone-Yumoto or Gotemba station are the only options, and services are infrequent outside peak season
  • Car or taxi essentially required to get between sights; the plateau is spread out and not walkable between attractions
  • Very limited dining outside ryokan; those staying without meals included will struggle to find variety in the evenings
