Trade-off

Spice country and tiger reserve — wildlife, cardamom estates, and the best spice market in South India.

Thekkady is the gateway to Periyar Tiger Reserve — 925 square kilometres of protected forest on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, centred on Periyar Lake. The area also encompasses some of the finest cardamom, pepper, and cinnamon plantations in India. Wildlife at Periyar includes elephant herds, gaur (Indian bison), sambar deer, leopard, and a tiger population — rarely seen but whose presence shapes the entire forest ecology. The Spice Village resort (CGH Earth) and Aranya Nivas are the best in-park accommodation options.

What you gain

  • Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary boat safaris on the lake at dawn offer reliable elephant sightings as herds come to drink — the experience of watching a 30-elephant herd from a silent boat on a misty morning lake is extraordinary and underpriced at ₹300–500 for the ticket
  • Kumily town's spice market is the best place in South India to buy cardamom, black pepper, cinnamon, and vanilla directly from cooperative sellers at fair prices — a genuinely useful shopping destination rather than a tourist market
  • Night patrol treks with Periyar Tiger Reserve guides (a community-run programme employing former poachers as guides) are among the most authentic wildlife experiences in India

What you sacrifice

  • Thekkady is 3–4 hours from both Kochi and the backwater region — it works as a dedicated 2-night stop or as part of a Kerala circuit but not as a day trip
  • Tiger sightings at Periyar are rare: the landscape is dense and tigers cover enormous territories. Visit for elephants, gaur, and forest atmosphere — not guaranteed tiger encounters
