Railay Beach

The crown jewel — only reachable by longtail boat, surrounded by karst cliffs and zero roads.
Railay is the most dramatic beach setting in Thailand: a peninsula cut off from the mainland by impenetrable limestone karst, accessible only by longtail boat from Ao Nang or Krabi Town. The result is a car-free enclave where the limestone towers rise directly from the jungle above the beach, and the rock climbing on Railay East wall attracts serious climbers from across Asia. West Railay faces the open Andaman and holds the better beach; East Railay is the operational hub with the boat landing and most accommodation.

What you gain
- ↑No cars and no roads — the most scenically dramatic beach setting in Thailand; the karst towers, jungle, and turquoise water are unmatched on the Andaman coast
- ↑World-class rock climbing on Railay East wall: dry limestone from November to April, with routes from beginner to 8b+; the most famous climbing destination in Southeast Asia
- ↑Completely separated from Ao Nang's commercial strip by water and jungle — a genuinely self-contained environment that feels nothing like the mainland tourist beaches
What you sacrifice
- ↓Boat-only access means you are entirely dependent on longtail service: in monsoon season (May–October) boats are cancelled or very rough and you can be effectively stranded
- ↓Accommodation prices significantly higher than Ao Nang, with fewer options across the range; budget guesthouses here cost more than mid-range hotels on the mainland
- ↓ATMs on Railay are unreliable and often empty — bring enough cash for your entire stay before boarding the longtail
