Top pick
The Vatican's residential neighbour — elegant, calm, and genuinely Roman.
Prati is the neighbourhood Rome's own middle class chose to live in: wide boulevards, good supermarkets, decent restaurants at fair prices, and a 10-minute walk from St Peter's Square. It lacks the atmosphere of Trastevere and the grandeur of the Historic Centre, but for longer stays it's the most practical and genuinely liveable part of central Rome.

What you gain
- ↑Vatican Museums and St Peter's Basilica a 10-minute walk — ideal for early entry before crowds
- ↑Via Cola di Rienzo: Rome's best local shopping street with food shops, bakeries, and non-tourist restaurants
- ↑Wide, flat pavements and a residential calm that most of central Rome lacks
What you sacrifice
- ↓Lacks atmosphere — it's a functional neighbourhood rather than an evocative one
- ↓Quiet after 9pm; not a neighbourhood for those wanting evening energy
- ↓A long walk or metro ride from the Colosseum and most of Rome's ancient sights
