Testaccio Rome — working-class neighbourhood and covered market

Good

Rome's old working-class market district — the best food neighbourhood in the city.

Testaccio is built around its market and its history as Rome's slaughterhouse district — which is why it's still the best place to eat in the city. The Mercato Testaccio, trapizzino, and some of Rome's finest trattorias are here. It's a short walk from the Aventine and Circus Maximus, and has good nightlife in the old warehouses along the Tiber.

What you gain

  • Mercato Testaccio — Rome's best food market: local produce, street food, and exceptional quality
  • Trapizzino birthplace: the triangular pizza pocket that started here and remains best here
  • The Aventine Hill rose garden and Orange Garden: free, beautiful, and almost tourist-free

What you sacrifice

  • A 30-minute walk from the Colosseum or Trastevere — further than it looks on a map
  • Fewer hotel options; mostly B&Bs and apartments
  • The nightlife zone can be noisy on weekend nights
