Trade-off
Rome's most atmospheric neighbourhood — ochre walls, ivy, and the city's best evening energy.
Trastevere was the working-class neighbourhood that became the most romantic. Narrow cobbled lanes, vine-covered facades, and Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere — one of Rome's most beautiful squares. In the evening it comes alive with a mix of locals and visitors that still tilts local enough to feel genuine. The Gianicolo hill is a short walk for the best city panorama.

What you gain
- ↑Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere — Rome's most beautiful neighbourhood square, especially at night
- ↑Best aperitivo and after-dinner bar scene in Rome; the streets fill with locals from 7pm
- ↑Close enough to the Vatican (20 min walk) and Campo de' Fiori without being in the tourist core
What you sacrifice
- ↓Cobbled streets are hard on knees, heels, and luggage; not suited to mobility issues
- ↓Noisy on weekend nights — the bar scene that makes it special makes sleep difficult
- ↓Tourist density has risen sharply; the most photographed streets now feel very busy in high season
