Colombo Sri Lanka — Galle Face Green promenade along the Indian Ocean in the heart of the city

Top pick

The gateway city — colonial museums, excellent restaurants, and beach towns a short train ride south.

Colombo is where almost every Sri Lanka itinerary begins and ends: the international airport is in Katunayake, 30 kilometres north of the city, and Colombo functions primarily as a transit and acclimatisation stop. The Pettah market district and Fort area have colonial architecture and chaotic energy; Colombo 3 and 7 (Kollupitiya and Cinnamon Gardens) have excellent restaurants, independent bookshops, and tree-lined streets. The beach towns of Negombo (north, near the airport) and Bentota (south) are popular first or last nights. The Colombo–Galle coastal railway, running along the shoreline, is one of Asia's most scenic commuter trains.

What you gain

  • The only practical hub with full transport connections: buses, trains, and tuk-tuks to every region depart from here; planning onward journeys is easiest from Colombo
  • The Colombo–Galle railway hugs the coastline so closely that waves occasionally spray the carriages — a 2.5-hour journey to Galle Fort for about ₨400 (under £1)
  • Colombo's restaurant scene, centred on Colombo 3, is the best on the island: excellent Sri Lankan rice-and-curry, upscale seafood, and craft beer bars that wouldn't be out of place in London

What you sacrifice

  • Colombo is a functional city first, a tourist destination second — the famous sights are museums and temples rather than the kind of visual drama found in Kandy or Galle
  • Traffic in central Colombo is severe at rush hour; tuk-tuks are the only practical intra-city transport and journeys take longer than maps suggest
