Kandy & the Hill Country

The cultural heart of Sri Lanka — the Temple of the Tooth, the world's most scenic train, and Ella's nine arches.
Kandy is Sri Lanka's spiritual capital: the Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic) is the island's holiest Buddhist site, and the Kandy Esala Perahera — a festival of drumming, fire, and decorated elephants — draws visitors from across the world in July–August. From Kandy, the famous Badulla hill-country train winds through tea estates to Ella: a four-hour journey of waterfalls and ridge-top villages that regularly tops travellers' best-train lists. Ella itself is compact, walkable, and photogenic — Little Adam's Peak, Nine Arches Bridge, and Ravana Falls all within an hour on foot or tuk-tuk.

What you gain
- ↑The iconic Kandy–Ella train (book observation car seats weeks ahead) is one of the world's great rail journeys — ridge-top views of tea estates, waterfalls, and cloud forest at every bend
- ↑Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic: the most important Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka, with daily puja ceremonies (6am, 10am, 6:30pm) that are free to attend and genuinely atmospheric
- ↑Ella is one of the best bases in South Asia for slow travel — very walkable, excellent cafés, and all major hikes within easy reach without a vehicle
What you sacrifice
- ↓The train books up fast, especially the observation car on the Ella–Kandy line — tickets must be reserved through Sri Lanka Railways weeks ahead, and third-class is crowded in peak season
- ↓Kandy city itself has traffic and can feel chaotic; the lake area is pleasant but the broader city is a functional Sri Lankan town rather than a beautiful one
