Cultural Triangle

Sigiriya Rock, ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa — the archaeological heart of the island.
The Cultural Triangle encompasses Sri Lanka's most extraordinary ancient sites in a compact area of dry-zone jungle and rice paddies. Sigiriya Rock Fortress — a fifth-century palace complex on a 200-metre volcanic plug, with frescoes and mirror-wall gardens — is among the most remarkable ancient monuments in Asia. Nearby Dambulla Cave Temple shelters 150 Buddha statues across five cave shrines. To the north, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa are ruined city-states spanning nearly 2,000 years of Sinhalese civilisation: monks in saffron robes still make offerings at dagobas that predate Notre-Dame by 1,500 years. Sigiriya is the only village with tourist infrastructure; most visitors stay here and day-trip to other sites.

What you gain
- ↑Sigiriya Rock at sunrise is one of the most dramatic archaeological sites on Earth — the climb to the fortress summit with 360° views over the jungle canopy is unmissable
- ↑Dambulla Cave Temple is compact, free of the climbing involved at Sigiriya, and genuinely spiritual — the golden-robe Buddha and ancient frescoes in Cave IV are exceptional
- ↑Polonnaruwa's Gal Viharaya — three colossal Buddha figures carved from a single granite face — is one of the finest pieces of rock sculpture anywhere in Asia, and almost never crowded
What you sacrifice
- ↓A tuk-tuk or car is essential for all movement — the Cultural Triangle sites are 5–40 kilometres apart and there is no meaningful public transport linking them
- ↓Sigiriya village is small and the accommodation/food scene is thin outside of a few lodges; the experience is purely archaeological rather than a town to enjoy in itself
