East Coast

Arugam Bay surf, Trincomalee's turquoise bay, and the most local, unhurried corner of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka's east coast runs on a different seasonal calendar to the south and west — the summer dry season (May–September) brings flat seas, blue skies, and the island's best surf at Arugam Bay. Arugam Bay is a low-key strip of surf shops and beach restaurants: Point, the main break, is one of the top ten surf spots in Asia during the season. Trincomalee, to the north, has one of the finest natural harbours in the world and exceptional snorkelling at Pigeon Island National Park. The east coast receives far fewer international tourists than the south, prices are lower, and the communities are more mixed — Tamil, Muslim, and Sinhalese — giving a more complex and authentic portrait of the island.

What you gain
- ↑Arugam Bay surf season (May–October) offers consistent, well-shaped waves at Point for intermediate to advanced surfers — the spot has a genuinely unhurried, non-commercial atmosphere
- ↑Pigeon Island National Park near Trincomalee is among the best snorkelling in Sri Lanka: blacktip reef sharks, hawksbill turtles, and hard coral gardens in excellent visibility
- ↑Prices are 30–50% lower than the south coast for equivalent accommodation and food — the east coast offers more genuine value-for-money than any other region in Sri Lanka
What you sacrifice
- ↓Getting here from Colombo takes 5–7 hours (bus or car, no direct train to Arugam Bay) — the distance and journey time means the east coast suits those staying at least 4–5 nights rather than passing through
- ↓The east coast dry season (May–October) is the south coast's rainy season — you can't easily combine both coasts in a single good-weather trip without careful planning
